“Music inspires me to be different, step outside of the box, but still stay true to myself.
I hope my music will touch others in the same way.”
ALEX WAY was born on February 28, 1993 in her hometown, Detroit, MI. From the day she was born, she has been immersed in music because her family was filled with talented musicians and singers. She began singing when she was 4 years old in her church choir and loved it. She discovered her other love, the violin, when she was 11 years old. She gave her first performance singing and playing violin in a camp talent show. From then on, she knew she wanted to be a performer.
Alex began violin studies in the Detroit studio of Michelle May and continued with Hai Xin Wu of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. She received additional training through musical programs with Cass Tech High School, the Sphinx Organization, the Arts League of Michigan, Her&Her Music, Wayne State University, and other private coaching, all of which have helped her to develop as a singer and violinist. She has performed in venues all over Detroit, including the Music Hall, 5E Gallery, Virgil H. Carr Center, Orchestra Hall, and the Fox Theatre. She has performed with such nationally and internationally renowned musicians as Al McKenzie, Marcus Belgrave, Marion Hayden, and Regina Carter. Alex’s top musical inspirations include India.Arie, Lauryn Hill, and Black Violin. In the future, she would love to work with her inspirations and other artists, such as Luke James, Musiq Soulchild, and Miguel.
Alex has received prestigious awards such as the Theodore Edward Harris, Jr. Scholarship and Achievement Awards, Michigan Youth Arts Festival Nominated Soloist and Small Ensemble, and WSU/DSO Scholarship Award.
Alex is a recent graduate of Wayne State with a Bachelor of Arts in Music. She is a proud alum of Cass Technical High School and Detroit Country Day. She enjoys volunteering with her church, and including mission work around Detroit, in the Bahamas, and in South Africa.
In her spare time, Alex loves to be with her family and friends, shop, and learn new instruments. She also enjoys teaching violin to younger students and inspiring them to create music.
